Elon Musk’s X removes ‘criminal’ crypto account after backlash

When Elon Musk acquired Twitter back in 2022, he famously remarked, “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app.”
Of late, the old bird’s chirps have begun to sound like a birdsong to the crypto community. But community members have found some of the chords to be dissonant.
Last week, X product head Nikita Bier announced that the social media platform will soon launch Smart Cashtags. It is a feature that allows users to tag specific assets, including crypto assets.
A few days later, Bier announced a revision of X’s developer API policies to disallow apps like information finance (InfoFi) that reward users for posting. Bier said X took the decision to contain AI slop and spam.
InfoFi is a crypto concept that involves turning financial information and user engagement into monetary value.
While some members of the crypto community on X welcomed the decision, it didn’t go down well with certain members.
For instance, one crypto user said that since X doesn’t pay creators enough, people like him try to earn via other means like InfoFi.

Crypto backlash forces X to remove ‘criminal’ account from Starterpack
On Jan. 21, Bier announced the launch of a new tool on X, which again led to backlash from the crypto community.
Called “Starterpacks,” the new tool will help new users find the best X accounts according to their interests.
Whether it’s finance, investing, venture capital, fitness, or memes, nearly every popular category will have a starter pack, Bier reassured the X community.
There are several crypto-focused super packs also, such as Crypto Founders, Bitcoin Maximalists, etc.
One of the crypto packs is “Meme Trading.” However, the inclusion of the account, LexaproTrader, drew sharp criticism from the crypto community.
The account has frequently shilled untrustworthy crypto projects that often rug pull on investors. One user told Bier that LexaproTrader is nothing but a “criminal.” Another called the account a “serial scammer.”
Moonpay, the popular crypto payments firm, also questioned the inclusion of the account.
However, LexaproTrader got removed from the “Meme Trading” pack following the backlash from the crypto community.
Ethereum founder excluded from ‘Crypto Founders’ pack
The exclusion of Ethereum (ETH) founder Vitalik Buterin from the “Crypto Founders” pack also irked the community.
Though Bier responded that Buterin is a part of the “Ethereum Builders” pack, the crypto community expressed disbelief at the fact that the “most important crypto founder in the history of the entire space” not being on the “Crypto Founders” pack is “crazy.”
