Charlie Kirk Vows to Champion Roger Ver’s Cause Against Government Overreach

Following Roger Ver’s attorneys submitting a motion to dismiss his tax case, Charlie Kirk, the political activist, author and host of “The Charlie Kirk Show,” took the opportunity to weigh in during a recent episode of his show.

On Dec. 6, 2024, Ver joined Kirk, co-host Drew Hernandez, and Tracy Thurman, the campaign lead at freerogernow.org, on the show. The group dissected the U.S. government’s case against Ver. Known in the crypto world as “Bitcoin Jesus,” Ver made a silent yet powerful statement by sitting with a piece of tape across his mouth that read “censored.” Though he remained mute—aware his words could be used against him—Thurman stepped in to give the audience a clear picture of Ver’s predicament.

Thurman explained, “When you renounce your U.S. citizenship there’s something called the exit tax, which is this unconstitutional tax that you have to pay upon leaving, if you’re worth over $2 million. Roger did his utmost to fully comply with that there’s a Motion to Dismiss that you can find on freerogernow.org.”

“[The Motion] lays it all out and shows, beyond a shadow of a doubt that he did everything he possibly could to comply, and yet the U.S. government has been going scorched Earth against him — attempting to take him down and why are they doing that? Well, Roger’s been one of the biggest critics of the U.S. government’s many programs,” Thurman told Kirk.

Thurman broke down the charges against Ver, explaining they stem from allegations of not paying enough exit tax. She called the case “utterly ludicrous” and pointed out that Ver was accused of underpaying exit taxes in 2014, as well as allegedly not paying enough in 2017. Highlighting the oddity of the 2017 charge, Thurman noted that Ver wasn’t even a U.S. citizen at the time, posing the question: “Why on Earth would he owe those taxes?”

Thurman stressed to Kirk that the case is complex, explaining that when someone exits the U.S., they’re required to pay a “constructive hypothetical sale” tax. Essentially, you act as though you sold everything you own in a single day—the day before leaving. She highlighted the absurdity of this by pointing out that Ver owned such a massive share of the world’s bitcoin at the time that if he had tried to sell it all, the market would have tanked, leaving his holdings virtually worthless.

Thurman likened the scenario to everyone in the U.S. selling their homes on the same day and expecting Zillow estimates—an impossible dream, since those values would crash in the blink of an eye.

“[The government] essentially wants Zillow value for everybody’s home if everybody sold on the same day, that’s what they are asking for out of Roger,” she explained on Kirk’s podcast. She explained that, at its core, the situation boils down to this: Roger sought out the nation’s top tax accountants and lawyers, assembling the most qualified team he could find. His clear directive to them? Make sure his exit taxes were handled flawlessly, leaving no room for error.

Thurman said:

So we know that he wanted perfect compliance. And how do we know that? We know that because in 2017, they raided his attorney’s office, armed federal agents raided and interrogated his attornies, seized reams of documents from his attornies, and attempted to use them against Roger. That should terrify every American. Because [the government] is attempting to destroy attorney-client privilege using this case.

Thurman shared with Kirk that the U.S. President has the authority to unilaterally pardon Roger, and the incoming Department of Justice could also choose to dismiss the charges altogether. She emphasized that the freerogernow.org campaign is passionately advocating for one of these outcomes, arguing that the ongoing lawfare must come to an end. Thurman also mentioned a petition people can sign. Kirk chimed in, saying he “totally agrees” with Thurman that the lawfare has to stop.

The podcast host added that he plans to tweet President-elect Trump, urging him to put an end to it, noting that Trump himself “was once a victim” of lawfare. “A pardon, lifting of charges, whatever it takes, time for a clean slate free Roger,” Kirk remarked on the podcast. The show host added:

We’ll be pushing in any way that we can, thank you guys so much and I hope to meet you as a free citizen Roger.
