Experts Warn: Africa's High Crypto Adoption Rate Attracts Cybercriminals

Africa is facing a surge in cyberattacks where hackers hijack social media accounts of prominent figures and institutions to promote fake cryptocurrencies. Some experts recommend educational campaigns to teach users how to verify token promotions.

Compromised Accounts Used in Crypto Fraud Promotions

Africa faces a growing threat from hackers who are hijacking the social media accounts of prominent figures and trusted institutions to promote fake cryptocurrencies. In recent months, a surge in cyberattacks has targeted high-profile individuals and organizations, compromising their verified accounts to disseminate fraudulent cryptocurrency promotions.

As indicated by reports from Bitcoin.com News and other media outlets, cybercriminals using this modus operandi have targeted the social media accounts of a Kenyan law enforcement agency, South Africa’s parliament, and Ghanaian President John Mahama, among others. In many cases, the cybercriminals controlled the social media accounts for at least 24 hours before the owners regained control.

In other cases, victims of these attacks could only alert users via non-social media channels. While no figures on the total losses incurred are available, some observers estimate the losses to be in the millions of dollars.

Although this problem is not confined to the African continent, experts believe the region’s relatively high cryptocurrency adoption rate is one of the main reasons hackers target accounts of African institutions or individuals with large followings. This viewpoint is shared by Anthony Anzalone, founder and CEO of XION, who also cites economic factors.

“This combination of high adoption and economic leverage creates an attractive environment for scammers. Additionally, the genuine enthusiasm for cryptocurrency as a solution to currency instability and limited banking access means promotional messages find receptive audiences eager to participate in what they perceive as legitimate opportunities,” Anzalone stated.

Expert Recommends Strong Digital Hygiene

The XION founder dismisses assertions that regulation can dissuade cybercriminals from targeting African social media users. Instead, Anzalone believes social media platforms can help combat these criminals by implementing “stronger account security measures and verification protocols.” Aside from social media platforms, players in the digital asset industry must establish “clearer standards for identifying legitimate projects.”

According to Anzalone, efforts should also be directed toward educational campaigns that teach both prospective and current cryptocurrency users ways to verify token promotions across multiple trusted sources. He adds that prospective token or memecoin buyers must be taught not to base an investment decision on a single post on X by their favored celebrity. Anzalone believes instilling this verification mindset in users is far more effective than relying on technological solutions, which become outdated.

“Creating this verification mindset within communities is ultimately more resilient than relying solely on technical solutions that determined attackers will eventually circumvent,” Anzalone told Bitcoin.com News.

Meanwhile, XION founder’s sentiments on prioritizing user education are shared by Datagram.network CEO Jason Brink, a recent hacking victim himself. According to Brink, maintaining good digital hygiene—which includes avoiding reusing passwords, cleaning up old app connections, and staying on top of permissions—makes it difficult for cybercriminals to take over a social media account.

To protect leaders and influencers who are increasingly being targeted by hackers, Brink emphasized the importance of better security habits.

“We need stronger security habits, better tools, and maybe some smart collaboration between the industry and local regulators—just enough to help without killing innovation. The crypto space has a responsibility to help users in emerging markets stay safe while they explore what’s possible,” Brink stated.

For his part, Anzalone said robust know your customer (KYC) procedures specifically designed to identify suspicious promotional activities should be implemented. He also called for the creation of regional rapid-response networks that can quickly alert communities when scams are identified. The work of such networks would go a long way in limiting damage when incidents occur, he said.
