China and Thailand Cops Seize $2.5 Million in Cryptocurrency Fraud in Joint Operation

In a successful collaboration between Thailand and China, law enforcement agencies have dismantled a major cryptocurrency driven human trafficking network, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of $2.5 million in USDT.

The operation, which took place on February 5, was a coordinated effort between the Thai Huamark Police Station and the Police Cyber Taskforce (PCT). Authorities raided a luxury residence where two Chinese nationals, 29-year-old Ye Wanyou and 30-year-old Li Weijie, were detained. The suspects attempted to delete crucial data from their phones in a bid to evade capture but were quickly arrested. During the raid, investigators also uncovered $44,550 in hidden assets linked to cryptocurrency wallets.

A significant breakthrough occurred on February 7 when a joint investigation revealed that the suspects were connected to human trafficking activities near Mae Sot district, close to Thailand’s border with Myanmar.

According to local media report by Khasod English, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was quick to direct high-ranking police officials, including Police General Kitt-rath Phanphetch and Police General Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, to ensure continued cooperation with Chinese counterparts.

As the investigation dug deeper, authorities have also linked the fraudsters to fraudulent product sales operations within Thailand and suspect further illegal activity in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Adding to the charges, the two suspects now face allegations of public fraud. Law enforcement has requested the criminal court to deny bail as they continue to explore the full network of the operation and identify any additional accomplices. This incident highlights the increasing use of cryptocurrencies in fraud and illegal activities. Recently, Takumi Niwa, a 30-year-old Japanese table tennis star and bronze medalist at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, was arrested on suspicion of participating in illegal online gambling using cryptocurrency.
