Layer 1 blockchain project Aptos (APT) and Jump Trading subsidiary Jump Crypto have announced the development of a high-performance hot storage network they call “Shelby.”

According to the press release, Shelby will offer developers a decentralized storage solution that runs at cloud speeds for applications such as video streaming, social media timelines, AI data streams, and decentralized physical infrastructures (DePIN).

Shelby is positioned as a decentralized protocol that works with verifiable data streams. Aptos Labs is developing a user-oriented blockchain infrastructure with its team from major technology companies such as Meta, while Jump Crypto uses its experience from high-frequency transaction systems for low-latency data access and parallel data streaming.

The aim of this collaboration is to combine the transparency and reliability offered by blockchain with the speed of traditional applications. It is known that blockchain-based social media or broadcast platforms have had difficulty reaching a wide user base to date. For example, the social-finance platform Friendtech, which was launched in 2023 and attracted great attention in a short time, lost its impact after its token launch in 2024 due to technical problems and slowness.

Unlike previous decentralized storage solutions, Shelby promises near-instant response times with its “hot” data processing infrastructure. Aptos engineering lead Pranav Raval said in a statement:

“Current platforms monetize users’ content, data, and followers. Shelby is turning that model on its head. It gives content creators full control over pricing, reach, and revenue models while delivering Web2 speed. This isn’t just a technical change; it’s a new business model.”
