Gaming firm GameSquare boasts a $26M Ethereum fortune, but quiet debt fine print leaves just $2.1M in real cash

GameSquare Holdings reported stronger second-quarter operations alongside a $7.83 million crypto-linked accounting loss. The gaming and creator-economy company ended June with $2.1 million in cash and $12.1 million of current promissory notes payable, making the availability of GameSquare crypto holdings central to the liquidity picture.

The company’s Aug. 12 earnings exhibit listed 15,080.51 $ETH at June 30 and a rounded $25.9 million aggregate across $ETH, altcoin investments, and cash. Restricted cash of $2.36 million appeared separately. The combined pool had more reported value than the note principal, with most of that pool held in digital assets whose June pledge status was undisclosed.

GameSquare reported a $7.83 million realized and unrealized loss on its crypto holdings and $ETH-fund investment during the quarter. The six-month loss on that line reached $22.42 million, inclusive of the second-quarter figure. GAAP consolidated net loss was $10.65 million.

Revenue reached $18.48 million, and company-defined adjusted EBITDA was positive at $961,636. The unaudited non-GAAP reconciliation included the $7.83 million crypto-loss line as its largest addition among several adjustments, separating the operating metric from the treasury losses reflected in GAAP results.

Why GameSquare crypto holdings can be constrained by notes

GameSquare’s May 14 filing for the quarter ended March 31 documented the earlier note terms. It described $ETH-backed borrowings carrying 8.5% to 9.5% annual interest and successive 60-day extensions unless either party gave notice. The balance stood at $9.5 million on March 31 and increased to $11.1 million in April.

At March 31, 6,958.15 $ETH worth $14.6 million secured the borrowings. Pledged $ETH could not be freely transferred. A collateral ratio below 130% triggered a margin call, and a ratio below 120% permitted liquidation after a 24-hour cure period.

Those disclosures provide a historical baseline for the $12.1 million note balance reported at June 30. The June earnings exhibit omitted the amount of $ETH then pledged and the notes’ updated maturity or rollover status. The SEC submissions record, checked through Aug. 13, contained no June-quarter Form 10-Q with those details.

GameSquare subsequently demonstrated its willingness to convert treasury assets. A July 15 capital-allocation update disclosed a sale of 1,209 $ETH and approximately 14,300 $ETH held on July 14. The rounded July holding establishes a reduction after the June snapshot without providing a complete reconciliation of the two balances.

The value of GameSquare crypto holdings and cash exceeded the current-note principal at June 30. Repayment capacity still depends on asset conversion, operating inflows or financing because cash was below the note balance and the June collateral commitment remains unknown. The missing pledge and rollover details determine how much of the reported $ETH value was actually available.
