Lesser-tracked bitcoin market dynamic lends credibility to August surge to $80,000

Bitcoin $BTC$78,535.13 jumped nearly 25% last week to above $80,000, its best weekly performance in over three years. Several catalysts, including strong ETF inflows and the U.S. Treasury’s bond buyback announcement, make this surge believable.

But there’s another major factor, one that gets far less attention but is fundamental to understanding whether genuine demand drove prices higher or it was just a few large orders having an outsized impact. That factor is order book liquidity, or market depth, which indicates how easy it is to execute large orders at stable prices.

When a price rally is accompanied by high liquidity, it shows that capital is actually moving in size to support the move. In short, it’s a sign of real demand underneath. When liquidity is low and price rallies, the rally is driven by a few large orders that move prices around, weakening the bullish case.

Bitcoin’s recent rise happened against the backdrop of high liquidity, data from major exchanges tracked by CoinDesk Research show.

The average 0.5% market depth across major spot exchanges, representing the combined value of buy and sell orders placed within 0.5% of the current price, stood at roughly $9.6 million in $BTC on Aug. 18, the day the rally began from around $64,000. That’s in line with the $9 million record on Jan. 1 when $BTC traded around $88,000. That figure is also greater than $8 million in October when $BTC traded at record highs above $120,000.

The same 0.5% depth pulled back slightly to $8.7 million by Aug. 25 when $BTC reached $80,000, but remained well within normal variance. The 1% and 2% market depths tell largely the same story.

“In dollar terms, top-of-book liquidity was broadly stable across the rally – marginally softer on the 25th but well within normal snapshot variation, with no meaningful thinning within 0.5% of mid before or after,” CoinDesk Research said. “So the ~24% move to $80K looks consistent with genuine demand being absorbed rather than a sudden low-liquidity air pocket.”

This is especially noteworthy because August is typically the thinnest month for liquidity across both crypto and traditional finance, as trading desks scale back over the Northern Hemisphere summer. Depth holding steady through that stretch, in the middle of a 25% surge, argues that the buying was genuine – orders were being absorbed at scale rather than air pockets being filled in a hollow market. Ether and solana show the same pattern in their respective order books, with 0.5% higher depth on Aug. 25 than in October.
