Could Elon Musk’s X Money Embrace XRP? XRPL CTO Weighs In

Denis Angell, Chief Technology Officer of the XRPL Foundation, analyzed the potential for Elon Musk’s X Money to integrate the digital asset $XRP into its payments infrastructure.

In his proposal, the developer outlines a framework that extends well beyond merely accepting merchant payments. Angell considers it feasible to connect the X social platform’s digital wallet with native decentralized yield and asset management tools built directly into the $XRP Ledger (XRPL).

From this technical perspective, users would be able to transfer funds directly from their everyday account balances into the token to interact with onchain primitives. Denis Angell noted that he sees no technical barriers to allowing direct transfers into $XRP from the application’s internal balance, provided the system features integrated on-ramp and off-ramp mechanisms to interact with the protocol’s financial instruments.

The initiative aims to narrow the operational divide between retail consumer accounts and decentralized environments. Technical specifications and statements from the executive indicate that the foundation prioritizes deploying traditional financial functionality directly onto the network’s base layer, avoiding exclusive reliance on external smart contracts. Among these core components is the native lending protocol, which is currently live on the network awaiting validator approval via governance vote.

Additionally, Angell highlighted the single-asset vault architecture. This mechanism functions similarly to a conventional mutual fund, allowing multiple participants to pool capital into a single repository where varied strategies generate cumulative yields until withdrawal. The architecture envisioned by developers seeks to host tokenized representations of equities, bonds, and options natively on the distributed ledger.

Current operational status of payments on the X platform

Despite the technical interest expressed by the XRPL community, the social network’s payment infrastructure maintains a strict separation from the crypto market.

The X Money tool currently operates as a closed-loop fiat environment. The service allows users to hold bank balances, execute fee-free peer-to-peer transfers between registered accounts, set up direct payroll deposits, and make purchases via a Visa-backed debit card, featuring cashback merchant perks and guaranteed high-yield savings rates.

The rollout of the financial product began in June for a select group of Premium+ subscribers, expanding in late July to a broader tier of paying accounts. It is worth noting that Elon Musk described the eventual rollout of lending services, high-yield savings, and digital asset integration as a long-term vision back in March; however, no public crypto functionality has been enabled since.

The company’s engineering resources remain dedicated to optimizing dollar-denominated transaction processing. While various industry reports have pointed to preliminary discussions regarding creator compensation via stablecoins, the underlying system remains firmly anchored to traditional banking rails.

The immediate regulatory and operational hurdle for X involves securing money transmitter licenses (MTLs) across the remaining US jurisdictions—a mandatory compliance prerequisite before any potential expansion into decentralized instruments can take place.
